Gutter cleaning: All you need to know!

At Palmetto Pressure Clean, one of the services we provide is gutter cleaning. Property owners often add this service on to a house/building wash when they have gutters that need to be cleaned out (we also clean the outside of them, but we'll save that topic for a future post.) If you've ever wondered about why you need gutters, when they should be cleaned out or how you know when it is time to make the call to get them cleaned, keep reading. Below are some of the most common questions we come across when talking to property owners.

Why do I need gutters?
Gutters carry rainwater from roof areas down the side of a structure and safely away from the foundation. You don't want water near your foundation because it could leak inside the structure and potentially cause flooding or foundation problems. Any fascia boards or rafters can begin to rot from any repetitive dripping of water. The sides of a structure will weather much faster from the excess water beating on the side.

How do I know if my gutters need to be cleaned?
Clogged gutters are useless gutters! Clogs prevent rain water from traveling through gutter system and to the downspout exit. Water will instead flow over the top of the gutter creating splashes of dirt onto your structure and trodden areas of ground. Or the water will flow over the back of the gutter - creating a potential nightmare of water leaking into your structure. Another indicator that your gutters may be clogged is a constant dripping or leaking of water from gutters even when there has been no recent rain.

How do gutters get clogged?
If you have trees on or near your property, your gutters will fill with debris. The heaviest gutter filling time is essentially the closing of the seasons of Spring and Fall: April/May/June when you'll have a falling of seed pods and blossoms and October/November/December with the falling of leaves and pinestraw. Nature's critters can also make homes out of your gutters (birds and squirrels) which will cause a clog.

When should I clean my gutters?
Twice a year is a good rule of thumb - at the close of Spring and close of Fall. If you don't get your gutters cleaned out after Spring with the seed pods falling, you will have germinated seeds and eventually plants and trees growing out of your gutters! And not getting your gutters cleaned out after Fall could lead to property damage with heavy snow or ice adding weight to clogged gutters.

At Hudson’s Smokehouse, grease is inevitable. Happily, Palmetto Pressure Clean is just a phone call away.

“We had some grease out back that got spilled, and if it stayed there, it would have been a mess and gotten us fines and written up by the city of Columbia,” recalls Steve MacDougall, Hudson’s director of operations. He called Palmetto Pressure Clean to handle the sidewalk spill that occurred at Hudson’s Harbison location. Owner Dustin Cook arrived that afternoon. Before 9 the next morning, Palmetto Pressure Clean was on the scene and the grease became a memory.

Ditto for the old smokehouse at the now-defunct Porky D’s restaurant. When Hudson’s recently began operating from that location, they called Palmetto Pressure Clean to clean the old smokehouse. “It was covered in grease,” Steve says. “Palmetto Pressure Clean came out the next morning and took care of it. DHEC couldn’t believe how clean it was.”

That’s all in a day’s work for Palmetto Pressure Clean, a six-year-old company started by Dustin, a former Marine, and his wife Lana, a fitness instructor. “Restore the Feeling of New” is their trademarked slogan. Homes, RVs, roofs, decks, patios, gutters, vinyl siding, moldy furniture, and graffiti all are fodder for PPC. “We use low pressure with detergent, which cleans, instead of high pressure, which can cause damage,” explains Lana, the company’s sales manager. “That’s the last thing we want to happen.”

Palmetto Pressure Clean (479-7416; www.palmettopressureclean.com) has four employees, a fleet of three trucks, and serves residential customers in Lexington and Columbia. They travel statewide for commercial jobs. A quarterly newsletter includes tidbits about the Cooks’ two small children, dog, and recipes. “We make it family-centered, which is how we run our business,” Lana says. “We treat customers like extended family.”

Restoring something dingy or dirty to clean and sparkling makes for gratifying work, Lana says. “The other day we did a job and the gentleman came outside and said, ‘Wow, this property hasn’t looked this good in 10 years.’”

How to Choose: Protect Your Assets

The lowest price is not always the less expensive choice.

After having to correct work performed by "companies" and witnessing property damage repeatedly, I decided to write about a recurring problem we have noticed become more prominent as of late in our industry. With the current state of our economy, shopping on price has become more important. However, in the service industry it is almost always a bad decision to keep shopping until you are out of the realm of what is realistic for a legitimate, taxpaying, licensed and insured business to provide. Then, you run into problems with inexperience, cutting corners and even risking lawsuits by having unreputable persons working on your property. We have a photo album full of property damage that far exceeds the rate charged for the services rendered.

Questions to ask exterior cleaning contractors:
1. Do you have a license to work in my area?
2. Do you have liability insurance?
3. Do you have references? (The Better Business Bureau - BBB - and Angie's List are excellent resources for this.)
4. Ask them to explain their methodology. A professional should be more than happy to explain the benefits of using their services.
5. I would say to ask them how long they have been in business, but this is not always a good indicator of proper technique. (PPC has been in business for 5 years.)

If you are comfortable with the answers given for these few questions, then you can be confident you have done your research.

Metal Awnings in the Upstate

This weekend we had an unusual task - to make some metal awnings of some of our regularly maintained shopping centers look NEW again! With a combination of our high-reaching equipment, specialty cleaners and safe low-pressure method, we were able to accomplish this for our client. Shopping centers, though, require off-hours cleaning when they are closed, so after traveling all night, power napping, and up again for Sunday fleet washing, Dustin is taking a much deserved break!
